The winter that keeps on giving

Tonight we are in Santo Dominingo de la Calzada, an amazing town dating back to the 10th century. Originally a hermit, Dominingo, lived here. To help pilgrims he built the bridge over the river, and some road, and a church. Then he built his own sarcophagus. There is now a huge Cathedral complete with two live chickens, and a thriving pilgrim town....there's chickens behind those bars!

The road here was not easy however. The weather continues to get us down and conspires against our will. Can you see the snow?

I'll own up, yesterday we caught a taxi 2 whole stages. As it was yet again about 5c, and blowing hard.  We went to Najera, where we stayed in a great hostel.

This morning found us in good spirits and we made fast time, 6km in an hour. But the weather got colder and wetter. Snow was on all the hills around us. We got very chilled and by the time we arrived at a snow covered golf course at the 15km mark we didn't feel we could go any further. Unfortunately my bag was being transported to  Santa Dominingo, and so we caught a taxi there.

Here's what a hostel looks like after rain

I find 20km is my limit on a good day, but in bad weather, 12-15km is my max, so tomorrow we have planned just to go 10km.

Keeping our fingers crossed that the weather improves. We've heard of two people who have slipped and broken their legs, a Japanese man 2 days ago and today an Austrian who our taxi driver had to take to the hospital in Logrono for corrective surgery. And, boy, we have seen some bad blisters!
